Is Truckload Freight Shipping the Right Option for You?

Typically, if your shipment occupies more than half of the capacity of a 48’-53’ trailer, FTL is the way to go. FTL shipping is usually used when a shipper decides they have enough items to fill a truck, need a shipment to be in a trailer by itself, or have a time-sensitive shipment that must be delivered quickly.

If the answer to any of these questions is… YES, then you probably need a quote on a full truckload for your freight:

  • Is your shipment around or over 10,000 lbs?
  • Is there just one origin and one destination point?
  • Can my shipment fill an entire truck container?
  • Will I be able to load and unload the shipment or have an agent do so?

Full truckload freight shipping (FTL) is the full-size alternative to LTL – Less-Than-Truckload shipping. In LTL shipping, you pay only for the trailer space you use. In contrast, FTL freight shipping requires the full capacity of a trailer.

Simple! You pack your shipment, contract with a carrier, and they come to your loading dock, pick it up, and deliver it to your destination.

LTL shipments do not require the full space or weight limit of a trailer – FTL (Full Truck Load) shipments do. When you pay for LTL shipping, you only pay for what you use. If you pay for FTL shipping, you must pay for the weight and volume of the entire truck trailer.

There are three primary types of trailers used for FTL deliveries, as follows:

  • Dry Van – Dry van trailers are the standard type of trailer used for non temperature-sensitive goods and deliveries, consisting of a simple enclosure designed to hold shipping pallets.
  • Flatbed – Flatbed trailers have no walls, and are used for shipments that can’t fit through the doors of a dry van. Examples include the shipment of construction equipment and raw materials such as concrete piping.
  • Reefer/Refrigerated – Similar to a dry van, but designed to keep loads of freight at a specific desired temperature. These are most common for perishable items and foodstuffs, but can be used for any temperature-sensitive item, such as chemical compounds or other delicate goods.
  • Quick Transit – Goods that are shipped via FTL services arrive directly at their destination with no need to visit a “hub-and-spoke” distribution center – unlike LTL shipments. This leads to an overall faster transit time.
  • Less Susceptible To Damage – FTL shipments are less susceptible to damage, as compared to LTL shipments. This is because, in LTL shipping, goods are moved off of the full-sized truck at a fulfillment center, and then packed onto another truck for end-delivery. Since your goods must move between multiple trucks, there is a higher risk of damage. In an FTL shipment, your items never move – you pack them, you send them, and you unload them. It’s as simple as that.
  • Better Rates – Compared to sending multiple LTL shipments piecemeal, using an entire trailer’s space can be more cost-effective – even if you can’t fill the entire thing up yourself.

Full truckload freight is sent to its destination directly – there is no routing through a hub system or unloading of freight onto a different truck. This improves efficiency, and lowers shipping times.
